Tanzprojekt Elfi Schaefer-Schafroth

The Swiss-based Tanzprojekt Elfi Schaefer-Schafroth consists of choreographer, dancer, professor of dance Elfi Schaefer-Schafroth, designer Martin Schaefer, and director Jochen Heinrich. In cooperation with other artists the Tanzprojekt creates powerful and uniquely expressive interdisciplinary dance theater solos, which have been performed throughout Switzerland, in Germany, Austria, Mexico, India, the United States, and at various national and international festivals.

We created and performed six feature-length dance theater solos, The Red Book, Lichtungen, amourire, noa, millefeuille and KörperSand enchanting the audience and receiving enthusiastic reviews. Lichtungen was honored in the Annual Review of the New York Times 2004. Bitz'n Pieces is a collection of shorter duos, trios and group works created together with other artists.

We strongly believe in the impact of dance. Therefore we collaborate with choreographers, dancers and artists around the world and created the successful series DanceXchange, in which students share an evening with professional dancers and choreographers.

Choreographer and Dancer

Elfi Schaefer-Schafroth

Elfi is a dancer and choreographer and professor for dance at the Teachers University Zürich. She danced for many choreographers and performed her own work in New York, San Diego, Mexico, Germany, Austria, India, Africa and throughout Switzerland, and at various dance festivals in Europe, the United States and Mexico. She studied sports at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) and dance at the Zurich School of Dance Theatre (Zuerich Tanztheaterschule), at the University of California in San Diego, in New York and Paris.

Director and Biochemist

Jochen Heinrich

Jochen is a director, dramaturg, and biochemist. 1991-1995 he was in the DanceLab Berlin together with Norbert Servos and Tatjana Orlob. Since 1997 he is part of Tanzprojekt Elfi Schaefer-Schafroth. He also worked as biochemist at the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin, Institute for Medical Virology at the University of Zurich, Qiagen Instruments and Tecan.

Architect and Stage Designer

Martin Schaefer

Martin studied product and interior design at the HdKZ and founded his own design business in 1981. Since 1991 Martin is responsible for the design and production of stage sets for the Tanzprojekt Elfi Schaefer-Schafroth.
